Tips for heat waves
Now it is hot and it can sometimes feel indispensable. Here is a list from the Red Cross of things you can do to bring down the temperature.
- Avoid the sun. Stay in the shade. Wear sunscreen and protect your head if you have to be in the sun.
- Dress cool.
- Keep the temperature down in your home. Pull down blinds or for curtains, ventilate at night.
- Make sure you get plenty of fluids, preferably water, so you do not become dehydrated.
- Eat properly and preferably salad, fruit and other things that contain a lot of liquid.
- Take it easy. Avoid physical activity.
- Avoid drinking alcohol.
- Keep track of family, friends and neighbors. Help each other if needed. Some people are extra sensitive to heat and may need to take extra care - for example small children, pregnant women, the chronically ill and the elderly.
- Take care of your pet.
- Do not leave children and pets in parked vehicles. It quickly becomes very hot and can be life threatening.
